HD 166191: A Giant Planetesimal Collision

Shagun Desai

An interactive 3D simulation that reconstructs how a giant planetesimal collision creates an expanding cloud of debris and dust around a young star

Still from HD 166191: A Giant Planetesimal Collision

What it does

This project simulates a catastrophic planetesimal collision around the young star HD 166191 using N-body orbital dynamics, collision physics, fragmentation, and dust evolution. Two large planetesimals orbit the star before naturally converging and colliding, producing an expanding debris cloud. The simulation visualizes the impact, debris expansion, Keplerian orbital shear, radiation-pressure effects, optical dimming, and infrared dust emission through cinematic 3D graphics and live scientific measurements.
