Gravitational Lensing: Real Physics, Simulated Skies

Khalida Thanveera

Interactive gravitational-lensing simulation that uses the point-mass lens equation and inverse ray tracing to visualize the distortion of a background spiral galaxy.

Still from Gravitational Lensing: Real Physics, Simulated Skies

What it does

The simulation models gravitational lensing by a massive foreground object and calculates the physical Einstein angle using the lens equation. It then uses inverse ray tracing to transform a procedurally generated background galaxy, producing the characteristic gravitational-lensing distortion. The visualization can be explored interactively by moving the source position.
